Belfast

Belfast, jaren ‘60.

- ★★★½ Filmtotaal

"A twinkly-eyed childhood memoir – and rigorously fashioned to be an Oscar frontrunner" - ★★★ Independent

- ★★★★ Knack Focus

“Black-and-white has this paradoxical, transcendental quality- it’s descriptive without giving you everything,” he [Zambarloukos, cinematographer] continues. “You can show how people feel. The biggest part is removing the descriptive qualities of color and concentrating on the human condition. It creates a more honest portrait than color can.”

Haris Zambarloukos in: American Cinematographer, Vol. 103, nr. 2, feb. ’22, p. 30

“[…] there’s no question that the sentiment that flows throughout Belfast is authentic, heartfelt, and decidedly hard-earned. In that regard, this is a sentimentality that arguably functions, especially given the film’s fable-like narrative, as an aesthetic strategy to valorize the morally and politically principled beliefs of Buddy’s parents. While the film periodically uses energetic bursts of songs by Belfast native Van Morrison as musical exclamation marks, Belfast does not utilize the traditional, often imperceptible musical underscore to guide viewers’ responses.”

Gary Crowdus in: Cineaste, Vol. XLVII, nr. 2, maart 2022, p. 11
