Of course one of the huge selling points of Anatomy of a Murder is the jazz score by none other than Duke Ellington, whose music ranges from down-and-dirty big band sound filled with knotty chords to subtle passages for solo piano. […] the jazz […] sits almost contrapuntally over the small-town settings of the film as a sometimes angry, sometimes sultry, sometimes wistful counterbalance to the goings-on. […] In the end, there really isn’t anything that doesn’t work in Anatomy of a Murder with the possible exception of the soupy story of alcoholic redemption. Perhaps the movie’s strongest point, however, is that, by leaving more points unresolved than resolved, like Duke Ellington’s score, it reveals that in the law there is in fact more that is unwritten than written.
