Moving between electronic pop, dance, cabaret and performance, Maxi! turns desire, heartbreak, shame and bodily excess into songs that are playful, theatrical and unapologetically physical. Sex can become grief, a breakup can disappear down a toilet and a fart can be an act of honesty.
Maxi! is a musical project initiated by Belgian theatre maker and performer Maxime Dreesen. After years of creating performances around intimacy, sexuality and the politics of the body, Dreesen brings that practice into pop music, allowing theatre and music to contaminate each other. On stage, the boundary between concert and performance dissolves, with Maxi! always looking for another opening.
The debut album ANALBUM emerged from a close creative collaboration between musician and producer Benne Dousselaere and Maxime Dreesen. Together they created the songs, Dousselaere produced the album.
The album takes the anus as its unlikely point of departure, a place that receives, releases and transforms. Across eight songs, shit becomes compost, grief becomes pleasure, love escapes possession and letting go turns out to be much harder than it sounds.
At the heart of ANALBUM is a simple tension: what happens when we stop holding everything in?
