Free from ambition, Naima Joris taught herself to play guitar and piano in her attic room, covering her favourite songs and artists. That experimental mix of folk, paired with poetic lyrics and her stunning, enchanting voice, won over many hearts during those harsh and lonely COVID days.
Her self-titled debut EP, released in 2021 and filled with deep, intense songs, was not only her major breakthrough, but also a breathtaking and refreshing breeze through the ever-accelerating and pre-programmed music industry.
What followed were the Radio 1 Belpop Promise award, a MIA nomination for Breakthrough of the Year and (more importantly) two new albums: Tribute to Daniel Johnston and While The Moon.
At the Sint—Joriskerk, she returns to the beginning—to that attic room and those disarming covers. Naima Joris and Vitja Pauwels strip timeless songs by the likes of Nick Drake, Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits, Billie Holiday down to their core. Whisper-soft. Intense. The kind of music that makes you fall silent. And stay silent.
