A red thread running through the work and oeuvre of Nicolas Mortelmans is the sitar. An instrument he has mastered in the traditional way, trained by the world-renowned Anoushka Shankar — yes, the daughter of. With his ensemble, Nicolas builds a bridge (bridging the gap, not the long weekend) between his burning love for Indian music and his roots in Western genres such as electronic jazz. His debut album MĀYĀ is a colourful collection featuring triple-A guest musicians like Ravichandra Kulur from India, Benny Bettane from Australia, and local legends Roland van Campenhout, Tim Vanhamel and Stef Kamil Carlens.
