Huisvrouw en moeder Alice Hyatts leven wordt overhoop gehaald wanneer haar man sterft in een ongeluk. Met weinig perspectief en enkel jobervaring als lounge zangeres, besluit ze om samen met haar 11-jarige zoontje Tommy van New Mexico naar haar thuisstad Monterey in California te verhuizen. Om hun reis te bekostigen, zoekt Alice onderweg werk als zangeres in clubs. Dat zorgt ervoor dat Tommy vaak voor zichzelf moet zorgen. Alices plannen leiden zelden tot het gewenste resultaat en uiteindelijk neemt ze een job aan als serveerster in een diner in Tucson, Arizona. Natuurlijk komen er onderweg ook mannen op Alices pad, die een vaderrol in Tommy’s leven opnemen. Alices vrijzinnige opvoedingsstijl zorgt al eens voor ophef bij haar aanbidders, maar gelukkig blijft ze haar moederinstinct volgen in haar relatie met Tommy.

Door het succes van Burstyns vorige film, THE EXORCIST, kreeg de actrice carte blanche voor haar volgende project. Burstyn had twee doelen voor ogen: een film maken over een vrouw met herkenbare problemen en werken met een veelbelovende jonge regisseur. Toen Martin Scorsese zich aandiende, twijfelde Burstyn door zijn palmares als ‘mannenregisseur’. “What do you know about women?”, vroeg de actrice. “Nothing, but I’d like to learn”, antwoordde Scorsese. Dat antwoord was voldoende voor Burstyn en maar goed ook, want ze won de Oscar voor Beste Actrice voor haar rol in de film.

Housewife and mother Alice Hyatts’s life is turned upside down when her husband dies in an accident. With little perspective and her only job experience being a lounge singer, she decides to move from New Mexico to her hometown of Monterey with her 11-year-old son Tommy. In order to pay their travels, Alice looks for work as a singer in clubs along the way. This does mean that Tommy often has to fend for himself. Alice’s plans seldom turn out the way she wanted and eventually she ends up taking a job as a waitress in a diner. Of course, she meets men along the way as well, who take on a parental role in Tommy’s life. However, Alice’s liberal parenting style ruffles some feathers among her admirers, but luckily she continues to follow her maternal instincts in her relationship with Tommy.

Because of the success of Burstyn’s previous film, THE EXORCIST, the actress was given carte blanche for her next project. She had two goals: make a movie about a woman with real-life problems and work with a promising young director. When Martin Scorsese presented himself, Burstyn hesitated due to his oeuvre as a director of men. “What do you know about women?”, asked the actress. “Nothing, but I’d like to learn”, responded Scorsese. A good enough answer for Burstyn, and luckily enough because the role earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
