Papar (Sybren Ypma, Lucas Valk, Wrister Meiresonne & Lukas Amer) is een multidisciplinair collectief dat zich richt op film- en muziekproductie. Visueel, sonisch en thematisch streeft Papar ernaar om het publiek op nieuwe manieren te betrekken, waarbij de relatie tussen gevoel en rede wordt verkend: emotie komt eerst, betekenis volgt.

‘Beata Solitudo Sola Beatitudo’ is het startpunt van Papar. Met dit korte visuele werk begon het collectief de verschillende dimensies van afzondering te onderzoeken. Het werk toont hoe een individu zich losmaakt van de omgeving en de opkomst van een ‘zelf’ ervaart.

In THE TREE IN THE WIND SHOULDN'T THINK IT IS DANCING keren de makers van Papar terug naar een kinderlijke kijk op de wereld. Sybren Ypma, scenarioschrijver en regisseur van Papar, ontwikkelde de film rond een jeugdles van zijn moeder: “Je hoeft dingen niet te begrijpen om ze mooi te vinden.” Op 26-jarige leeftijd kijkt hij terug op zijn jeugd, een tijd waarin hij de wereld niet hoefde te begrijpen om schoonheid te ervaren.

Visueel nodigt de film de kijker uit om zich opnieuw te openen voor het mysterie en de magie van het leven, zonder de drang tot uitleg. De film stelt de vraag of ons verlangen om alles te begrijpen, zowel in onszelf als daarbuiten, uiteindelijk een muur creëert die ons zicht op ware schoonheid belemmert. Komt schoonheid niet te dichtbij de toeschouwer te staan? Is het niet puurder wanneer schoonheid onafhankelijk van het ego kan bestaan, gewoon kan zijn, zonder opgeëist of verklaard te worden? In een visuele cultuur waarin alles verteerbaar en begrijpelijk wordt gemaakt, voelt het team van Papar dat de kinderlijke schoonheid van mysterie en naïviteit dreigt te verdwijnen.

‘Beata Solitudo Sola Beatitudo’ is Papars starting point. With this short work, the collective began exploring the many dimensions of solitude, showing how an individual separates from their social surroundings and experiences the emergence of the self.

In THE TREE IN THE WIND SHOULDN'T THINK IT IS DANCING, the creators of Papar return to a childlike perspective on the world. Sybren Ypma, screenwriter and director of Papar, developed the film around a childhood lesson from his mother: “Things don’t need to be understood to be beautiful.” At the age of 26, he looks back at his childhood, to a time when he didn't need to understand the world to find beauty in it.

Visually, the film invites the viewer to reopen themselves to the mystery and magic of life, without the urge of explanation. It poses the question of whether our desire to understand everything, both within and outside of ourselves, ultimately creates a wall that obscures our view of true beauty. Does it not in fact draw the beauty too close to the spectator? Isn’t it purer when beauty can exist independently of the ego, when it can simply be, without being claimed or explained? In a visual culture where everything is made digestible and understandable, the team at Papar feels that the childlike beauty of mystery and naivety is at risk of being lost. This short film is the starting point for many musically and visually driven projects that the audiovisual collective intends to create.
