Het feministische filmcollectief Girls on Film, dat elke tweede dinsdag van de maand een gastspreker uitnodigt om vrouwen voor en achter de camera in de kijker te zetten, verwelkomt in oktober Lyse Ishimwe Nsengiyumva die de A24-film ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL komt in- en uitleiden.

Met het drama I AM NOT A WITCH sleepte Rungano Nyoni een BAFTA Award voor de beste debuutfilm in de wacht en werd ze eveneens geselecteerd als Britse kandidaat voor de Oscar voor de beste buitenlandse film van dat jaar. Terwijl ze in I AM NOT A WITCH vooral het thema 'hekserij' (en vooral het onterecht beschuldigen van vrouwen hiervan) in het rurale Afrika als thema naar voren schoof, is haar laatste wapenfeit ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL een aanklacht tegen de zwijgcultuur die in Zambia heerst jegens daders van seksueel geweld. Zowel via haar debuutfilm als haar via laatste film bestrijdt Nyoni het onrecht dat (Afrikaanse) vrouwen wordt aangedaan.

Op een verlaten weg midden in de nacht stuit Shula op het lichaam van haar (overleden) oom. Terwijl de begrafenisceremonie om hen heen opgestart wordt, brengen zij en haar neven en nichten de verborgen geheimen van hun Zambiaanse familie aan het licht.

Lyse Ishimwe Nsengiyumva is filmcurator en fotograaf. In 2016 richtte ze het Brusselse collectief RECOGNITION op, een initiatief dat de zichtbaarheid van Afrikaanse en Afrikaanse diaspora-kunst, -literatuur en -cultuur wil versterken via gemeenschapsgerichte filmvertoningen. Binnen dit project stelt ze filmprogramma’s samen die worden gepresenteerd in kunst- en cultuurinstellingen in diverse Europese steden. Momenteel is Lyse actief als programmeur van speelfilms en korte films bij het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

Feminist film collective Girls on Film, which invites a guest speaker every second Tuesday of the month to put women in front of and behind the camera in the spotlight, welcomes Lyse Ishimwe Nsengiyumva, who will introduce and discuss the A24 film ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL.

With I AM NOT A WITCH, Rungano Nyoni won a BAFTA Award for Best Debut Film and was also selected as the British candidate for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film that year. In I AM NOT A WITCH, she mainly focused on the theme of ‘witchcraft’ (and especially the unjust accusation of women of this) in rural Africa, but her latest achievement, ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL, is an indictment of the culture of silence that prevails in Zambia towards perpetrators of sexual violence. Through both her debut and new film, Nyoni fights against the injustice done to (African) women.

On a deserted road in the middle of the night, Shula stumbles upon the body of her deceased uncle. As the funeral ceremony begins around them, she and her cousins reveal the hidden secrets of their Zambian family.

Lyse Ishimwe Nsengiyumva is a film curator and photographer. In 2016, she founded the Brussels-based collective RECOGNITION, an initiative that aims to increase the visibility of African and African diaspora art, literature, and culture through community-oriented film screenings. Within this project, she curates film programmes that are presented in art and cultural institutions in various European cities. Lyse is currently working as a programmer of feature films and short films at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

In november gaat het feministisch filmcollectief Girls on Film, dat elke tweede dinsdag van de maand een gastspreker uitnodigt om vrouwen voor en achter de camera in de kijker te zetten, in gesprek met filosofe Katrien Schaubroeck over L’UNE CHANTE, L’AUTRE PAS van Agnès Varda.

De film focust op de verstrengelde levens van twee vriendinnen in het Frankrijk van de jaren zeventig, toen de vrouwenbeweging op volle toeren draaide. Pauline en Suzanne ontmoeten elkaar wanneer de ene vrouw de andere helpt om een illegale abortus te plegen bij een derde zwangerschap. Ze verliezen contact, maar zien elkaar tien jaar later weer met Pauline – nu bekend als ‘Pomme’ – als zangeres en Suzanne als maatschappelijk werker. Ondanks hun verschillen blijven ze vrienden en delen ze de hoogtes en laagtes van elkaars leven.

Katrien Schaubroeck is een Belgische filosofe en hoogleraar moraalfilosofie aan de Universiteit Antwerpen. Haar onderzoek richt zich op ethiek, morele psychologie en de filosofie van emoties. In 2024 schreef ze een boek in de reeks 'Denken in het Donker' over Agnès Varda. 'Denken in het donker' is een reeks boeken uitgegeven door de Internationale School voor Wijsbegeerte (ISVW). De reeks bestaat uit filosofische beschouwingen bij het werk van verschillende kunstenaars, voornamelijk filmmakers en theatermakers.

This November, feminist film collective Girls on Film, which invites every second Tuesday of the month a speaker to put a spotlight on women in front of and behind the camera, starts a conversation with philosopher Katrien Schaubroeck about Agnès Varda's L'UNE CHANT, L'AUTRE PAS.

The film focuses on the intertwined lives of two friends in 1970s France, when the feminist movement was in full swing. Pauline and Suzanne meet each other when the one helps the other to commit an illegal abortion on a third's pregnancy. They lose contact but they meet again ten years later with Pauline – now famous as 'Pomme' – as a singer, and Suzanne as social worker. Despite their differences, they stay friends and share each other's highs and lows in life.

Katrien Shaubroeck is a Belgian philosopher and professor of moral philosophy at Antwerp University. Her research focuses on ethics, moral psychology and the philosophy of emotions. In 2024, she wrote a book in the series 'Denken in het Donker' ('Thinking in the Dark') about Agnès Varde. 'Denken in het Donker' is a book series, published by the Internationale School voor Wijsbegeerte (Internation School of Philosophy). The series consists of philosophical reflections on the works of various artists, mostly film- and theatre makers.

Met WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN leverde de Schotse regisseur Lynne Ramsay in 2011 een ijzingwekkende thriller af, gebaseerd op de gelijknamige roman van Lionel Shriver. Lynne Ramsay studeerde beeldende kunst, maar verlegde uiteindelijk haar interesse naar film nadat ze geïnspireerd raakte door het werk van Amerikaanse filmmaker Maya Deren. Haar afstudeerfilm SMALL DEATHS werd in 1996 bekroond met de Prix de Jury-prijs in Cannes. Haar laatste film DIE, MY LOVE, waarin een jonge vrouw worstelt met een post-partumpsychose, ging eerder dit jaar in première op het Filmfestival van Cannes. Met WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN creëerde Ramsay menig ouders grootste angst. Wat als je kind monsterlijk is?

Bij de geboorte van Kevin heeft Eva haar professionele leven en persoonlijke ambities op een laag pitje gezet. De communicatie tussen moeder en zoon verloopt moeizaam. Aan de vooravond van zijn 16de verjaardag pleegt Kevin een onherstelbare daad. Na deze tragische gebeurtenis worstelt Eva met haar eigen verdriet en schuldgevoelens. Ze wordt geconfronteerd met het ultieme taboe: hield ze wel van haar zoon? En aan hoeveel van wat Kevin deed, heeft zij schuld?

Op 9 december sluiten we het Girls on Film-seizoen van dit jaar af met Laura en Silke van de populaire Vlaamse true crime-podcast De Volksjury. Sinds 2017 leveren Laura Scheerlinck en Silke Vandenbroeck op maandelijkse basis podcastafleveringen af waarin ze telkens een (minder) bekende misdaadzaak bespreken. Dit doen ze op een persoonlijke en vlotte manier, met ruimte voor hun eigen kritische reflecties over justitie, media en de menselijke psyche.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN maakt deel uit van het MOMMIE DEAREST-programma, waarin De Cinema peilt naar de kracht van moeders en onze perceptie van het ‘ideale’ moederschap in cinema.

With WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN Scottish director Lynne Ramsay created a chilling thriller, based on the novel of the same name by Lionel Shriver. Lynne Ramsay studied visual art, but eventually moved into film after she was inspired by the work of American filmmaker Maya Deren. Her graduating film SMALL DEATHS won the Prix de Jury in Cannes in 1996. Her last film DIE, MY LOVE, about a woman who struggles with post-partum psychosis, premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival. With WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, Ramsay brought to the screen a parent’s worst nightmare: what if your child is monstrous?

After Kevin is born, Eva puts her professional life and personal ambitions on hold. The communication between mother and son is difficult. On the eve of his 16th birthday, Kevin commits a horrific crime. After this tragic event, Eva struggles with her own sadness and guilt. She is confronted with the ultimate taboo: did she love her son? And how much of what Kevin did, was her fault?

On the 9th of December, we conclude our Girls on Film season with Laura and Silke, of the popular Flemish true crime podcast De Volksjury. Since 2017, Laura Scheerlinck and Silke Vandenbroeck create monthly podcast episodes in which they cover known and lesser known crime cases. They use a personal and informal approach and leave room for their own critical reflections on justice, media and the human psyche.
