Regisseur Leilah Weinraub brengt de acht jaar van Shakedown in kaart en probeert “het voor en na van een utopisch moment in beeld te brengen”. SHAKEDOWN kon een paar jaar geleden op veel mond-aan-mond reclame rekenen toen de film gratis te zien was via Pornhub. Ondanks het vele naakt is Weinraub’s intieme portret net heel delicaat in de manier waarop het zijn onderwerpen presenteert lang voordat ze hun kleren beginnen uit te trekken. Een film die het belang van safe(r) spaces voor minderheden broodnodig onderstreept.

De film wordt voorafgegaan door Mirelle Borra’s korte videowerk SAFE SPACE (2021 - 10' EN OT): een compilatie YouTube clips van vroege ballroom performances uit de vroege jaren negentig. Ballroomcultuur werd gecreëerd door trans- en queermensen van kleur als reactie op een maatschappij die hun aanwezigheid marginaliseerde.

SHAKEDOWN is deel van De Cinema’s zomerprogramma ETERNAL SUMMER, ENDLESS NIGHTS, waarin zonovergoten ontdekkingen in contrast staan met het opzwepende hedonisme van de nacht.

In the early 2000s, Shakedown flourished as a lesbian strip club in LA founded by and for African-American women, one of the few places where this particular community could experience total sexual liberation. In 2004, the police closed all the doors.

Director Leilah Weinraub charts the eight years of Shakedown and attempts to “portray the before and after of a utopian moment.” Filmed with the tenderness of a home movie, SHAKEDOWN captures the propulsive, dreamlike atmosphere of the club and showcases its subjects in a stunningly intimate way. Presented as an old-school mixtape, this film is as bold as it is quietly mesmerising in the way it glosses over nothing but just shows everything. This empathetic documentary is an essential relic for the past, present, and future of the queer community.

SHAKEDOWN gained a lot of word-of-mouth publicity a few years ago when the film was available for free viewing via Pornhub. Despite the amount of nudity, Weinraub's intimate portrait is very delicate in the way it presents its subjects long before they start taking off their clothes.

The film will be preceded by Mirelle Borra's short video work SAFE SPACE (2021 - 10' EN SUB): a compilation of YouTube clips of ballroom performances from the early 90s. Ballroom culture was created by coloured trans and queer people as a reaction on a society which marginalized their presence.

SHAKEDOWN is part of De Cinema’s summer programme ETERNAL SUMMER, ENDLESS NIGHTS, in which sunlit discoveries are contrasted with the inciting hedonism of the night.
