Na jarenlang als kluizenaar geleefd te hebben, kondigt snoepmaker Willy Wonka aan dat de gelukkige vinders van vijf gouden tickets, die verstopt zitten in zijn geliefde Wonka Bars, een privérondleiding krijgen in zijn chocoladefabriek én een levenslange voorraad van Wonka Chocolade winnen. De arme maar hoopvolle Charlie gaat op zoek naar één van de vijf tickets, want het is zijn droom om de mysterieuze fabriek te bezoeken. Door een speling van het lot komt die droom ook uit! Samen met zijn Opa Joe en de vier andere winnaars wordt Charlie ondergedompeld in de wondere wereld van Willy Wonka.

WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is gebaseerd op Roald Dahls Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. Dahl haakte wegens creatieve verschillen af als scenarist van de film. Maar dat laat zich niet merken in de dialogen, want ook in de film is “a little nonsense now and then relished by the wisest men". Van scrumdiddlyumptious sweets tot overheerlijke sets, kleurrijke kostuums en Gene Wilder op z’n best als de chocolatier zelve. Net zoals in het boek combineert de film entertainment met onderliggende moraal: goedheid wordt beloond en hebzucht leidt tot niets goeds… Zoals de eigenaardige Wonka het zelf zegt: “so shines a good deed in a weary world".

After years of living like a hermit, candy maker Willy Wonka announces that the lucky finders of five golden tickets, hidden in his beloved Wonka Bars, will get a private tour of his chocolate factory and will win a lifelong supply of Wonka Chocolate. The poor but hopeful Charlie goes out to find one of the five tickets, because it’s his dream to visit the mysterious factory. Through a twist of fate, his dream comes true! Together with his Grandpa Joe and the four other winners, Charlie is immersed in the wondrous world of Willy Wonka.

WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is based on Roald Dahl’s Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. Dahl dropped out of the project as a screenwriter due to creative differences. But that doesn’t show in the dialogue, because in the films as well “a little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” From scrumdiddlyumptious sweets to mouthwatering sets, colourful costumes and Gene Wilder at his best as the chocolatier himself. Just like the book, the film combines entertainment with underlying morale: kindness is rewarded, while greed leads to nothing good… As Willy Wonka says himself: “so shines a good deed in a weary world.”
