George Bailey zet zich al z’n hele leven in om de inwoners van zijn stadje Bedford Falls zo goed mogelijk te dienen. Zo is Georges bouw- en kredietbedrijfje bijvoorbeeld het enige wat de rijke en hebzuchtige Mr. Potter tegenhoudt om de hele stad over te nemen. Maar op kerstavond verliest het bedrijf $8000 en stapelen de problemen zich op voor George. Wanneer hij gefrustreerd de wens uitspreekt dat hij nooit geboren was, daalt een engel neer op de aarde om Georges wens te laten uitkomen. Maar niet voordat hij George toont hoeveel levens hij veranderde en hoe anders het leven voor al die mensen er zou hebben uitgezien als George nooit had geleefd.

George Bailey has devoted his life to serve the people of Bedford Falls as well as he can. For example, his building and loan company is the only thing that keeps the rich and greedy Mr. Potter from taking over the entire town. But on Christmas Eve, the company loses $8000 and George's troubles begin to grow. When he frustratedly expresses the wish to never have been born, an angel descends the earth to make George’s wish come true. But not before he shows George how many lives he has changed and how different the lives of all those people would have been if George wouldn’t have been there.
