Todd Haynes regisseerde met CAROL een adaptatie van Patricia Highsmiths novelle The Price of Salt. Het verhaal volgt twee vrouwen van verschillende milieus in het New York van de jaren '50. Todd Haynes’ CAROL is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt. The story follows two women of different backgrounds in New York in the fifties. However, the conventional norms of those days immediately test the bond and attraction between the women. Shop assistant Therese (Rooney Mara) dreams of a more satisfying life when she meets the older, married Carol (Cate Blanchett). The two of them feel an instant connection, but following up on that does not go without consequence.
