De laatste film die gemaakt werd onder het vaandel van Lois Weber Productions. Dit morele drama, ook geschreven door Weber, levert een bijtende commentaar op economische ongelijkheid. Door haar portret van de familie Griggs – een onderbetaalde professor, zijn lankmoedige vrouw en hun dochter Amelia, een bibliothecaresse – onthult Weber een samenleving waar ‘de schijn hoog houden’ een zaak is van basisnoden, meer dan van materiële bezittingen. De klassenproblematiek wordt verder onderzocht door de verschillende status van drie mannen die Amelia het hof maken: een welgestelde universiteitsstudent, een middenklasse ‘boy-next-door’ en een arme predikant. THE BLOT bewijst zowel Webers scherpzinnige sociale inzicht als haar krachtige visuele stempel.

"Ultimately, The Blot cannot be understood exclusively in terms of the tension between men’s and women’s points of view, nor does the film have a clear-cut feminist message, however feminist it may be in its general sensibility that women’s lives are important. Instead, it is necessary to examine somewhat differently the constitutive role of gender in structuring the narrative, the way in which the film’s overt argument about class is transformed by implicit assumptions about the relationship of class to gender. What The Blot reveals, above all, is both the way in which material conditions shape gender identities and the way in which men and women experience the slings and arrows of class oppression differently even within the same families."
