Hollywoodlegende Joan Crawford mag dan een Oscar gewonnen hebben voor haar vertolking van een toegewijde moeder in MILDRED PIERCE (ook op ons programma!), in het echte leven was de actrice berucht voor de gespannen relatie met haar kinderen. In 1978 schreef adoptiedochter Christina Crawford een exposé over haar bekende moeder, waarin Joans schandalen en wangedrag als alcoholverslaafde narcist uit de doeken worden gedaan. Het boek kreeg de titel Mommie Dearest, naar de koosnaam die Joan Crawford voor zichzelf eiste van haar kinderen, en werd door Frank Perry verfilmd in de gelijknamige camp cult classic.

In haar fascinerende over-the-top vertolking van Joan Crawford, hanteert Faye Dunaway een haast manische acteerstijl, aangesterkt met groteske expressies en uitvergrote bewegingen. De relatie tussen Crawford en Christina, de eerste van Crawfords vier geadopteerde kinderen, wordt verteld vanuit Christina’s standpunt. Joan is ervan overtuigd dat haar eigen moeilijke opvoeding bijdroeg tot haar succes en besluit dat ze haar kinderen niet zal verwennen. Christina wordt behandeld als een concurrente, eerder dan een dochter. Ondanks de mishandelingen blijft ze echter hunkeren naar de liefde van haar moeder.

De complexiteit van de relatie tussen Joan en haar adoptiekinderen blijft in de film aan de oppervlakte en ook Christina zelf – die niet betrokken was bij de scriptontwikkeling – nam afstand van de verfilming. “My mother didn't deserve that. I didn't see any care for factual information. Now I've seen the movie, I'm sorry I did. Faye says she is being haunted by mother's ghost. After her performance, I can understand why.” Zoals bij elke cultfilm wordt lof gevolgd door kritiek, en zit er maar één ding op: kom zelf kijken!

In 1978 adopted daughter Christina Crawford wrote an exposé on her famous mother, where she unveiled Joan’s scandals and misbehaviour as an alcoholic narcissist. The book is titled Mommie Dearest, after the pet name Joan Crawford demanded for herself from her children, and was adapted for the screen by Frank Perry in the camp cult classic of the same name.

In her fascinating over-the-top performance of Joan Crawford, Faye Dunaway adopted an almost manic acting style, strengthened by grotesque expressions and exaggerated movements. The relationship between Crawford and Christina, the first of Crawford’s four adopted children, is told from Christina’s point-of-view. Joan is convinced that her own difficult upbringing aided her success and decides not to spoil her children. Christina is treated as a competitor, rather than a daughter. However, despite the mistreatment she still longs for her mother’s love.

The complexity of the relationship between Joan and her adopted children remain superficial in the film and the real-life Christina herself – who wasn’t part of the project – distanced herself from the adaptation. “My mother didn't deserve that. I didn't see any care for factual information. Now I've seen the movie, I'm sorry I did. Faye says she is being haunted by mother's ghost. After her performance, I can understand why.” Like with any cult film, praise is followed by criticism and only one solution remains: come and see for yourself!
