Randall Peltzer is op zoek naar het perfecte kerstcadeau voor zijn tienerzoon Billy. In een antiekwinkel in Chinatown treft hij het ideale huisdier, een gek pluizig beestje dat Mogwai wordt genoemd. Maar bij de zorg voor het exotische diertje moet rekening gehouden worden met drie belangrijke regels: geen water, geen daglicht en geen eten na middernacht. Als een van deze regels – of ze allemaal – gebroken worden, dan breekt de hel los. Wanneer Billy onwetend de regels niet volgt, broedt er een leger aan slechte Mogwai’s die ravage aanrichten overal waar ze komen.

Bij zijn release creëerde GREMLINS verwarring onder nietsvermoedende ouders. Zij maakten de fatale fout om te denken dat ze te maken hadden met een gezellige familiefilm. Maar wees gewaarschuwd, ondanks hun schattige uiterlijk doen de Gremlins wat zelfs Chucky niet kan: zich vermommen als een onschuldige kersttraditie, waarvan we de griezelimpact elk jaar opnieuw onderschatten. Want vergeet niet: “There just might be a Gremlin in your house.”

Randall Peltzer is looking for the perfect Christmas gift for his teenage son Billy. In an antique store in Chinatown, he finds the perfect pet, a funny-looking furry creature called a Mogwai. But the care of this exotic animal comes with three ground rules: no water, no daylight and no food after midnight. If one of these rules – or all of them – is broken, all hell breaks loose. When Billy unknowingly breaks the rules, an army of bad Mogwai spawns and wreaks havoc everywhere they go.

With its release, GREMLINS created confusion amongst unsuspecting parents. They made the fatal error of thinking they were dealing with a cosy family film. But be warned, despite their cute exterior the Gremlins do what even Chucky can’t: disguise as an innocent Christmas tradition, of which we underestimate the creepy impact each year again. Because don’t forget: “There just might be a Gremlin in your house.”
