Een Franse actrice en een Japanse man beleven een korte maar intense liefdesgeschiedenis in het naoorlogse Hiroshima. Hun toevallige ontmoeting vormt de aanleiding voor een hypnotisch en fragmentarisch relaas over liefde, verlies en herinnering. In voice-over dialogeren ze over hun persoonlijke trauma’s en de collectieve littekens van de atoombom.

HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR was het langspeeldebuut van Alain Resnais en werd geschreven door Marguerite Duras, die voor haar scenario een Oscarnominatie ontving. Met zijn poëtische vertelvorm en niet-lineaire structuur geldt de film als een van de eerste werken van de Nouvelle Vague.

De vertoning op 8 januari wordt voorafgegaan door een lezing om 19u00 over de Franse Nouvelle Vague door Wouter Hessels, docent filmgeschiedenis (KASKA-DKO, RITCS, INSAS), en is gratis bij je filmticket inbegrepen.

A French actress and a Japanese man share a brief but intense love affair in postwar Hiroshima. Their chance encounter unfolds into a hypnotic and fragmented reflection on love, loss, and memory. In voice-over, they speak of their personal traumas and the collective scars left by the atomic bomb.

HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR marked the feature debut of Alain Resnais and was written by Marguerite Duras, who received an Academy Award nomination for her screenplay. With its poetic narration and non-linear structure, the film is considered one of the first works of the French New Wave.

The screening of 8 January will be preceded by a lecture (in Dutch) at 19h00 on the French Nouvelle Vague by film history professor Wouter Hessels (KASKA-DKO, RITCS, and INSAS) and is included in your entrance ticket.
