De restauratie van Margot Benacerrafs briljante film ARAYA is een mijlpaal binnen de filmgeschiedenis. De film werd onthaald als een meesterwerk van poëtische cinema en als een voorloper van feministische Latina cinema.

Het schiereiland van Araya in het Noordoosten van Venezuela is een van de meest droge plekken op aarde. Sinds 500 jaar, na de ontdekking door de Spanjaarden, wordt op Araya manueel zout gewonnen. Een 17de-eeuws fort dat gebouwd werd om aanvallen van piraten tegen te houden, staat nog steeds overeind als een herinnering aan de dagen waarin zout bijna zo veel waard was als goud. Regisseur Benacerraf verbeeldt het leven van de salineros (zoutwinners) en het uitputtende werk dat ze leveren in adembenemende beelden. De Peredas familie werkt ’s nachts in de zoutmijnen, de Ortiz familie bestaat uit vissers en de Salaz familie verzamelt zout. Deze drie families en hun verhalen onderstrepen het zware leven in deze regio – een leven op de rand van uitsterven door de komst van de industriële exploitatie.

ARAYA werd bij zijn release vergeleken met grote namen zoals Flaherty’s MAN OF ARAN (1934), Visconti’s LA TERRA TREMA (1947) en Rossellini’s INDIA (1957). Maker Margot Benacerraf beschreef de films als “a cinematic narration based on script writing rather than a spontaneous action, a feature documentary, the opposite of Italian neorealism.” Een film van zo’n blijvende schoonheid dat Jean Renoir na het bekijken ervan tegen Benacerraf zei: “Above all … don’t cut a single image!”

Ter ere van wat het 100ste levensjaar zou zijn van deze uitzonderlijke filmmaker, vertonen we ook haar korte documentairefilm, REVERÓN (VE 1952 - 30' EN OT), waarin Benacerraf de artiest Armando Reverón thuis opzoekt en zijn huiselijke leven en creatieve proces documenteert.

De film wordt voorafgegaan door een lezing om 19u00 over Latijns-Amerikaanse cinema van de jaren vijftig tot zeventig door Wouter Hessels, docent filmgeschiedenis (KASKA-DKO, RITCS, INSAS), en is gratis bij je filmticket inbegrepen.

The restoration of Margot Benacerraf's brilliant film ARAYA is a landmark in cinema history. The film was hailed as a masterpiece of poetic cinema and a forerunner of feminist Latina cinema. 

The peninsula of Araya in northeastern Venezuela, is one of the most arid places on earth. For five hundred years, since its discovery by the Spanish, the region’s salt has been exploited manually. A 17th-century fortress built to protect against pirate raids stands as a reminder of the days when salt was worth almost as much as gold and great fortunes were made. Benacerraf captures the life of the salineros and their back-breaking work in breathtaking images. The Peredas family works at night in the salt marshes, the Ortiz are fishermen and the Salaz collect salt. The three stories underline the harsh life of this region — all of which vanished with the arrival of industrial exploitation.

ARAYA was originally compared to Flaherty’s MAN OF ARAN (1934), Visconti’s LA TERRA TREMA (1947) and Rossellini’s INDIA (1957). Margot Benacerraf has described the film as “a cinematic narration based on script writing rather than a spontaneous action, a feature documentary, the opposite of Italian neorealism.” A film of such lasting beauty that Jean Renoir told Benacerraf after seeing the film: “Above all … don’t cut a single image!”

We love to honour this extraordinary filmmaker in what would have been het 100th year of life and will also screen her short documentary film REVERÓN (VE 1952 - 30' ENG ST), where Benacerraf visits the artist Armando Reverón at home to document his domestic life and creative process.

The film will be preceded by a lecture (in Dutch) at 19h00 on Latin-American cinema from the 1950s until the 70s by film history professor Wouter Hessels (KASKA-DKO, RITCS, and INSAS) and is included in your entrance ticket.
