WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN was Pedro Almodóvars grote doorbraak. Deze film uit 1988 is een sprankelende komedie waarin chaos, passie en kleur voortdurend door elkaar heen lopen. Centraal staat Pepa, een actrice wier leven ineenstort wanneer haar geliefde Ivan haar plotseling verlaat.

Terwijl Pepa haar verdriet probeert te verwerken, verandert haar appartement in een broeihaard van misverstanden en onverwachte ontmoetingen. Een vriendin klopt in paniek aan, Ivan’s jaloerse ex-vrouw verschijnt ten tonele, hun zoon – een jonge Antonio Banderas – staat voor de deur, en de politie komt zich ermee bemoeien. Het resultaat is een opeenstapeling van komische en absurde situaties die steeds verder ontsporen.

We vertonen deze film naar aanleiding van Spanish Cinema Day, in samenwerking met Instituto Cervantes. De film zal vooraf (+- 30 min) omkaderd worden door filmwetenschapper Bo Alfaro Decreton en de twee Spaanse journalisten en critici María Guerra en Mariola Cubells.

Deze film is onderdeel van ons retrospectief van PEDRO ALMÓDOVAR; 18 films die samen de vele gedaanten van zijn cinema zichtbaar maken.

WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN was Pedro Almodóvar’s big breakthrough. This 1988 film is a sparkling comedy where chaos, passion, and vibrant colours collide at every turn. At its center is Pepa, an actress whose life unravels when her lover Ivan suddenly leaves her.

As Pepa struggles to process her heartbreak, her apartment becomes a whirlwind of misunderstandings and unexpected arrivals. A panicked friend knocks at the door, Ivan’s jealous ex-wife appears, their son – a young Antonio Banderas – shows up, and the police get involved. One absurd and hilarious situation after another unfolds, creating a riotous comedy of errors.

With his energetic style, sense of the absurd, and deep compassion, Almodóvar turns this almost stage-like story into a lively cinematic experience. The film became an international sensation: at the time, it was the highest-grossing Spanish film ever, and audiences around the world fell in love with Almodóvar’s distinctive, eccentric vision.

We are screening this film as part of Spanish Cinema Day, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes. The screening will be preceeded (+- 30 min) by film scholar Bo Alfaro Decreton and the two Spanish journalists and critics María Guerra and Mariola Cubells.
