Naar aanleiding van Grafixx 2025 (21 november - 23 november) vertonen we twee meesterwerken van animeregisseur Mamoru Oshii (GHOST IN THE SHELL): PATLABOR: THE MOVIE en ANGEL’S EGG.

Net zoals AKIRA die een jaar eerder uitkwam, bestaat PATLABOR: THE MOVIE uit een iconische 80s animestijl die er nog steeds fantastisch uitziet. Beide films blijven een tijdloze waarschuwing over de gevaren van onbeperkte wetenschappelijke vooruitgang zonder moreel kompas. 

Aan het begin van het millennium in Tokyo worden Labors, geavanceerde onbemande robots, op grote schaal ingezet om de stad te herbouwen na een zware aardbeving. Na een mysterieuze zelfmoord en een verdwenen groep van deze autonome robots start een politieonderzoek. Een eigenzinnig team van de Metropolitan Police moet een complot ontrafelen om de 8.000 Labors in Tokyo te infecteren met een computervirus. Dit allemaal terwijl een krachtige tyfoon de stad nadert en de wraak van een dode man zich steeds meer ontplooit.

De film wordt ingeleid door filmcriticus Pieter Van Ballaer. Zijn teksten over animatiefilms verschenen eerder in photogénie en Fantômas. Op zaterdag 22 november wordt de film in het Engels ingeleid, op vrijdag 5 december in het Nederlands.

In light of Grafixx 2025 (21 November - 23 November), we are screening two masterpieces by animation director Mamoru Oshii (GHOST IN THE SHELL): PATLABOR: THE MOVIE and ANGEL’S EGG.

Like AKIRA, which was released a year earlier, PATLABOR: THE MOVIE features an iconic 80s anime aesthetic that still looks fantastic today. Both films remain a timeless warning about the dangers of unlimited scientific progress without a moral compass. 

At the beginning of the millennium in Tokyo, Labors, advanced unmanned robots, are deployed on a large scale to rebuild the city after a severe earthquake. After a mysterious suicide and the disappearance of a group of these autonomous robots, a police investigation begins. A maverick team from the Metropolitan Police must unravel a plot to coorupt the 8,000 Labors in Tokyo with a computer virus. Meanwhile a powerful typhoon approaches the city and a dead man's revenge unfolds.

The film will be introduced by film critic Pieter Van Ballaer. His writings on animated films have previously appeared in photogénie and Fantômas. On Saturday, November 22, the introduction will be in English; on Friday, December 5, it will be in Dutch.
