FLEE

Dit is het ware verhaal van Amin, een man die door zijn nakende huwelijk gedwongen wordt het verleden te onthullen dat hij zorgvuldig verborgen had gehouden. Zijn geheim, dat hij meer dan twintig jaar bewaarde, zet het leven dat hij heeft opgebouwd op losse schroeven. Hij vertelt over zijn moeilijke reis als kindvluchteling van Afghanistan naar Denemarken.

‘The decision to tell Amin’s tale through animation recalls Ari Folman’s Waltz with Bashir (2008), although unlike that grim depiction of war crimes, Flee has moments of great joy. It’s exhilarating to see a young Amin dashing through the streets of Kabul to A-ha’s ‘Take on Me’, with a whirl of energy that recalls the kinetic animation of the song’s video. A trip to a gay bar offers a tremendous moment of liberation. […] The devastating ending of Waltz with Bashir uses archive footage of the Sabra and Shatila massacre. Flee, too, uses real-life footage […] The final image, though, ends the film on a deserved and overwhelmingly moving note of optimism.’
