Ter ere van Oeganda’s Dag van de Onafhankelijkheid presenteert De Cinema, in samenwerking met het Afrikamuseum en Eight vzw, de nieuwe documentaire BLIND SPOTS van Steven Janssens (België) en Godfrey Mumpe (Oeganda). Na de vertoning modereert Reine Nkiambote (podcastmaker van What’s up with Reine?) een interactief paneldebat met docent Godfrey Mumpe (docent aan het National Teachers College, Kampala), studente Eseosa Gevers (voorzitter van de Afrikaanse studentenvereniging AYO) en filmmaker Steven Janssens.

BLIND SPOTS is een reis van een klaslokaal in Oeganda naar een Belgisch treinstation en laat zien hoe onderwijs, cultuur en instellingen onze manier van denken en handelen vormgeven. Centraal in het verhaal staan de leerlingen van geschiedenisleraar Godfrey. Hun vragen en onderzoek dienen als drijvende kracht terwijl ze koloniale en racistische systemen ontrafelen en proberen te overwinnen.

Door Godfrey’s drang om “ontdekkingen” opnieuw te definiëren, Kalule’s strijd om zijn cultuur te behouden en Billy’s oproep om de gestolen rijkdom van Afrika terug te vorderen, stelt de film de vraag: Kunnen we écht vooruit zonder onze eigen blinde vlekken onder ogen te zien? BLIND SPOTS belooft een verrassende, genuanceerde reis te worden, die humor en persoonlijke verhalen gebruikt om het perspectief van de kijker uit te dagen.

In honor of Uganda's Independence Day, De Cinema, in collaboration with the AfricaMuseum and Eight vzw, presents the new documentary BLIND SPOTS by Steven Janssens (Belgium) and Godfrey Mumpe (Uganda). After the screening, Reine Nkiambote (podcast creator of What’s up with Reine?) will moderate an interactive panel debate with teacher Godfrey Mumpe (lecturer at the National Teachers College, Kampala), student Eseosa Gevers (chair of the African student association AYO), and filmmaker Steven Janssens.

The film travels from a classroom in Uganda to a Belgian train station, showing how education, culture, and institutions shape our way of thinking and acting. At the center of the story are the students in history teacher Godfrey's classroom. Their questions and research serve as the driving force as they unravel, challenge, and try to overcome colonial mindsets and racist systems.

Through Godfrey's urge to redefine "discoveries," Kalule's fight to preserve his culture, and Billy's call to reclaim Africa's stolen wealth, the film poses the question: Can we truly move forward without confronting our own blind spots? BLIND SPOTS promises to be a surprising, non-judgmental journey, using humor and personal stories to challenge the viewer's perspective.
