Berlijn speelt een cruciale rol in Sebastian Schippers VICTORIA, waarin een jonge Spaanse vrouw al flirtend een vriendelijke local leert kennen. Victoria woont pas drie maanden in Berlijn. Bij het verlaten van een club na een nacht dansen en drinken, ontmoet ze vier jonge mannen die de toegang tot de club worden geweigerd. Nadat ze alcohol stelen uit een nachtwinkel, belanden ze op het dak van een flatgebouw waar ze samen marihuana roken, wanneer één van hen onthult dat hij in de gevangenis heeft gezeten.

De film werd opgenomen in één lange take, van 4:30 tot 7:00 uur ’s ochtends in de wijken Kreuzberg en Mitte in Berlijn. Het script bestond uit amper twaalf pagina’s en de meeste dialogen werden geïmproviseerd. Het productiebudget liet slechts drie pogingen tot de one-take toe. Volgens de regisseur was die eerste poging te “saai” omdat de acteurs te bang waren om fouten te maken; de tweede poging was het tegenovergestelde, omdat de acteurs te veel “uit hun dak gingen”. Volgens Schipper was de laatste take geslaagd omdat er een element van “agressie” in zat dat in de andere versies ontbrak.

VICTORIA is deel van De Cinema’s zomerprogramma ETERNAL SUMMER, ENDLESS NIGHTS, waarin zonovergoten ontdekkingen in contrast staan met het opzwepende hedonisme van de nacht.

Berlin plays a key role in Sebastian Schipper’s VICTORIA, in which a young Spanish woman gets to know a friendly local while flirting. Underneath lurks a constant, uncanny feeling, as if something big is about to happen at any moment—emphasised by German musician Nils Frahm’s special soundtrack.

Victoria has been living in Berlin for three months. Leaving a club after a night of dancing and drinking, she meets four young men who are denied entry to the club. After stealing some alcohol from an all-night shop, they all get on the roof of an apartment building where they smoke marijuana together, while one of them reveals that he spent time in jail for hurting someone.

The film was shot in a single long take, from 4:30 to 7:00 A.M. in the Kreuzberg and Mitte neighbourhoods of Berlin. The script consisted of twelve pages, with most of the dialogue being improvised. The production budget permitted only three attempts at the one-take. According to director Sebastian Schipper, the first attempt was dull because the actors were too cautious, being afraid to make mistakes; the second attempt was the opposite, as the actors went “crazy”. Schipper believes the final attempt was successful because there was an element of “aggression” that was missing in the other versions.
