Surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) staat bekend als de beste in de business. Wanneer Harry en zijn partner Stan (John Cazale) ingehuurd worden door een mysterieuze cliënt (Robert Duvall), die zichzelf ‘the Director’ noemt, om een jong koppel te volgen, ontcijfert Harry dat de vrouw de echtgenote is van ‘the Director’ en de man haar affairepartner. Harry is ervan overtuigd dat zijn cliënt het koppel gaat vermoorden. Surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) is renowned within the profession as the best in business. He values his anonymity highly and is a solitary man in both his personal and professional life. When he and his partner Stan (John Cazale) are hired by a mysterious client (Robert Duvall), who calls himself ‘the Director’, to follow a young couple, Harry deduces that the woman is ‘the Director’s’ wife and the man is an employee with whom she is having an affair. Harry becomes convinced that his client plans to murder the couple. The devout catholic Harry is still haunted by guilt over a previous assignment where the information he provided resulted in the loss of lives, and he begins his own investigation to prevent the murder.

THE CONVERSATION is a gripping psychological thriller, characterised by the typical American 70s paranoia atmosphere, inventive editing and sound design. The film is not only widely considered one of auteur Francis Ford Coppola’s best films, but also shows the exceptional acting talent of Gene Hackman. With this screening, we pay homage to Hackman, who recently and tragically passed away, and to his unparalleled oeuvre.
