De Amerikaanse danser Guy Holden (Fred Astaire) wordt na een vluchtige ontmoeting in Londen verliefd op de jonge, knappe Mimi Glossop (Ginger Rogers). Het toeval wil dat Mimi op het punt staat te scheiden van haar man, en om dat te bewerkstelligen moet ze van haar advocaat doen alsof ze een affaire heeft. De advocaat huurt Rodolfo Tonetti in om de taak te vervullen, maar voordat Rodolfo zijn diensten kan aanbieden, ziet Mimi Guy verkeerdelijk aan voor haar ingehuurde overspelpartner… Hoogtepunt is het spectaculaire 17 minuten durende The Continental, een dans die bij de release een echte rage werd. Het nummer won de eerste Oscar voor Beste Originele Nummer.
