De Britse filmmaker Isaac Julien was in 1983 medeoprichter van het Sankofa Film and Video Collective, een van de vele initiatieven uit de jaren tachtig die een onafhankelijk ecosysteem voor de Black British Cinema ontwikkelde ten tijde van grote sociale onrust. YOUNG SOUL REBELS kaart aan hoe openlijk seksistisch, racistisch en homofoob de eerste punk wave scene werkelijk was. De film viel in de prijzen op het filmfestival van Cannes en straalt nog steeds een aanstekelijk jeugdig enthousiasme uit, mede door een sfeervolle cinemafotografie en seventies soundtrack.

In his second feature film, YOUNG SOUL REBELS, often compared by critics to Spike Lee’s DO THE RIGHT THING, Isaac Julien paints an intense picture of late 1970s London on the eve of the AIDS epidemic. In subcultures (from punks to soulboys), young people fight against the norm. A queer love story buds just days before Queen Elizabeth’s silver jubilee celebrations.

The hedonistic world of DJ pirates Chris and Caz is disrupted when a close friend is murdered while cruising in a local park. The Black community suspects the National Front, but the police hold a different theory.

Isaac Julien co-founded the Sankofa Film and Video Collective in 1983, one of many 80s initiatives that developed an independent ecosystem for Black British Cinema at a time of great social upheaval. YOUNG SOUL REBELS charts how openly sexist, racist, and homophobic the early punk wave scene was. The film won awards at the Cannes Film Festival and still exudes an infectious youthful enthusiasm, helped by atmospheric cinematic photography and a 1970s soundtrack.
