Vanaf de jaren 1970 groeide Charles Burnett uit tot een sleutelfiguur van de Amerikaanse cinema met klassiekers als KILLER OF SHEEP (1978) en TO SLEEP WITH ANGER (1990). Maar toen hij in 1999 met THE ANNIHILATION OF FISH uitkwam, werd de film na één vernietigende recensie door de distributeur meteen in de lade geschoven.

Wat volgde was een ware odyssee: Burnett vroeg in 2003 aan Milestone Films om zijn “verloren film” te redden, wat resulteerde in 19 jaar vol telefoontjes, faxen, e-mails en juridische hindernissen, tot aan de Amerikaanse faillissementsrechtbank toe. Uiteindelijk kwam er goed nieuws, mede dankzij Martin Scorsese en zijn Film Foundation: in 2024 beleefde deze vergeten klassieker zijn glorieuze heropstanding op Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna. Nu beleeft hij zijn Belgische première.

Met zijn typische mix van menselijkheid en tragikomische warmte brengt Burnett dit keer een liefdevol verhaal over een excentriek ouder koppel – vertolkt door legendarische namen als James Earl Jones, Lynn Redgrave en Margot Kidder. Twee verloren zielen die samen hun demonen bevechten en opnieuw betekenis vinden in elkaar.

De film wordt ingeleid door FC Dollyshot, een filmclub die net net als het iconische dolly shot diepte en perspectief toe aan filmbeleving.

From the 1970s onward, Charles Burnett established himself as a key figure in American cinema with classics such as KILLER OF SHEEP (1978) and TO SLEEP WITH ANGER (1990). But when he released THE ANNIHILATION OF FISH in 1999, the film was shelved almost immediately after a single scathing review.

What followed was a true odyssey: in 2003 Burnett asked Milestone Films to rescue his “lost film,” leading to 19 years of phone calls, faxes, emails, and legal hurdles—reaching all the way to the U.S. bankruptcy court. At last, thanks in part to Martin Scorsese and his Film Foundation, this forgotten gem had its triumphant revival at Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna in 2024. Now it finally receives its Belgian premiere.

With his trademark blend of humanity and bittersweet humor, Burnett presents a tender love story about an eccentric older couple—brought to life by legends James Earl Jones, Lynn Redgrave, and Margot Kidder. Two lost souls who wrestle with their demons and rediscover meaning in each other.

The film will be introduced by FC Dollyshot, a film club that, like the iconic dolly shot, adds depth and perspective to the cinematic experience.
