Op een nacht ontmoet de jonge Caleb Colton de mooie en mysterieuze Mae in een klein stadje in het Mid-Westen. Ze spenderen de nacht samen en net voordat de zon opkomt, bijt Mae hem in de nek, waarna ze wegloopt. Wanneer even later het zonlicht hem raakt, begint Calebs huid fel te verbranden. Mae en een groep zwervende vampieren pikken hem net op tijd op in een RV en redden hem van een gewisse dood. De charismatische leider van de groep geeft Caleb een week de kans om hun levensstijl te leren. Met andere woorden: te leren moorden.

Kathryn Bigelow is een van de meest interessante filmmakers van onze tijd. Voor het succes van haar Oscarwinnende THE HURT LOCKER (2008), maakte Bigelow naam als genreregisseur. Of het nu groezelige politiefilm BLUE STEEL (1990), Willem Dafoe bikerfilm THE LOVELESS (1981) of de iconische Keanu Reeves surfthriller POINT BREAK (1991) is, geen genre heeft geheimen voor Bigelow. Met NEAR DARK waagt de regisseur zich aan een neo-Western vampierfilm. Bigelow en co-scenarist Eric Red gebruiken de ruwe en ruige setting van het Amerikaanse Mid-Westen in de jaren '80 om overtuigende vampirische en cinematografische folklore op het grote scherm te toveren. Horror, western en cult mixen mooi in Bigelows eerste soloregieproject.

NEAR DARK wordt bevolkt door een iconische ensemble cast: Bill Paxton is even entertainend als ontspoord in de rol van de bloeddorstige Severen, karakteracteur Lance Henriksen is zoals altijd overtuigend als de patriarch van de vampierbende en Adrian Pasdar als Caleb en Jenny Wright als Mae geven als de star-crossed lovers emotionele diepte aan de gotische western. One night, the young Caleb Colton meets the beautiful and mysterious Mae in a small Midwestern town. They spend the night together, and just before sunrise, Mae bites Caleb’s neck and she runs off. When the sunlight hits him, Caleb’s skin starts to burn severely. Mae and a group of drifting vampires turn up in an RV just in time to save him from a certain death. The charismatic leader of the group gives Caleb a week to learn their lifestyle. In other words: to learn to kill.

Kathryn Bigelow is one of the most interesting filmmakers of our day. Before the success of the Oscar-winning THE HURT LOCKER (2008), Bigelow made a name for herself as a genre director. Whether it be the gritty cop movie BLUE STEEL (1990), the Willem Dafoe biker film THE LOVELESS (1981) or the iconic Keanu Reeves surf thriller POINT BREAK (1991), no genre has any secrets from Bigelow. With NEAR DARK, the director ventures into the territory of a neo-Western vampire film. Bigelow and co-writer Eric Red use the rough and raw setting of the American Midwest in the 80s to create convincing vampiric and cinematographic lore for the big screen. Horror, western and cult mix and match in Bigelow’s first solo feature debut.

NEAR DARK is populated with an iconic ensemble cast: Bill Paxton is as entertaining as he is deranged in the role of bloodthirsty Severen, character actor Lance Henriksen is convincing as always as the patriarch of the vampire gang and Adrian Pasdar as Caleb and Jenny Wright as Mae give the gothic western emotional depth as the star-crossed lovers. The endless night promises eternal life to this group of violent vampires, but the sunlight threatens them every day.
