Een reus die een weesmeisje kidnapt en meevoert naar zijn land, waar andere reuzen leven die niets liever eten dan kinderen? Bedenkelijke inhoud voor een familiefilm. Maar Roald Dahl zou Roald Dahl niet zijn als hij zware onderwerpen niet zou verdraaien tot een geweldig verhaal vol humor en troost. “Meanings is not important. I cannot be right all the time. Quite often I is left instead of right.” Een vat vol wijsheden, die GVR. En in de animatie van Brian Cosgrove komt hij helemaal tot leven.

Sophie wordt vroeg in de ochtend weggenomen uit het weeshuis waar ze woont, nadat ze een reus spot die mysterieuze dingen lijkt te doen. De reus voert haar mee naar Reuzenland, maar gelukkig wordt Sophie snel gerustgesteld. De lange man blijkt de Grote Vriendelijke Reus te zijn – afgekort de GVR. Hij vangt mooie dromen en deelt ze uit aan slapende kinderen. Maar helaas zijn er ook gemene reuzen, die kinderen opeten. Sophie en de GVR bedenken een plan om de Koningin in te schakelen om de gemene reuzen te verslaan.

Early in the morning, Sophie is taken from the orphanage where she lives, after she saw a giant doing mysterious things. The giant takes her away to Giant Country, but luckily Sophie is soon reassured. The tall man turns out to be the Big Friendly Giant, BFG for short. He catches nice dreams and blows those dreams into the bedrooms of children at night. But unfortunately there are evil giants as well, who eat children. Sophie and the BFG make a plan to enlist the Queen to fight the mean giants.
