Na de dood van zijn grootmoeder keert de 13-jarige Bruno terug naar de arme Parijse buitenwijk van Bagnolet en trekt in bij zijn afwezige moeder. In het appartementencomplex ontmoet hij het jonge boefje Jean-Roger, die hem inlijft in een bende van delinquenten en een wereld van geweld.

Regisseur Jean-Claude Brisseau's kijk op de gewelddadige jongeren van de 'banlieue' is tegelijkertijd lucide en fabelachtig, flamboyant en met een documentaire aanvoelen, waarin realisme, droom en lyriek samenkomen. “None of my films are realistic, and certainly not naturalistic, including DE BRUIT ET DE FUREUR, even though it touched on a certain social reality. Brisseau creëert in DE BRUIT ET DE FUREUR (SOUND AND FURY) een harde, voyeuristische en surrealistische schaduwwereld waar de personages bestookt worden door seks en geweld. De film is een visionaire voorloper van de hedendaagse maatschappelijke en sociale onrust in de Parijse banlieues. Brisseau stelt de gevaren aan de kaak van een maatschappij die op het individu gericht is en geeft een oprechte reflectie op de verantwoordelijkheden van de maatschappij met betrekking tot opvoeding, wat resulteert in een visuele en emotionele schok.

Director Jean-Claude Brisseau’s view on the violent youngsters of the ‘banlieue’ is at the same time lucid and fantastical, flamboyant and with a documentary feel, where realism, dream and lyricism come together. “None of my films are realistic, and certainly not naturalistic, including DE BRUIT ET DE FUREUR, even though it touched on a certain social reality. They all contain a shadow zone,” said Brisseau about the film.

In DE BRUIT ET DE FUREUR (SOUND AND FURY), Brisseau creates a surreal shadow world where the characters are taken over by sex and violence. The film is a visionary predecessor to the contemporary societal and social unrest in the Parisian banlieues. Brisseau addresses the dangers of a society that is focused on the individual and shows an authentic reflection on the responsibilities of society as a whole when it comes to education and upbringing, which results in a visual and emotional shock.
