Ditmaal geen vrijdag de 13de, maar eveneens een ideale avond om te komen kijken naar twee huiveringwekkende body horror cultklassiekers vol misselijkmakende effecten!

In David Cronenberg’s THE FLY (een remake van de 50s scifi klassieker van dezelfde naam) ontmoeten we de briljante, excentrische professor Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum). Wanneer hij een machine ontwikkelt die teleporatie mogelijk zou maken, beslist hij om deze zelf uit te testen. Zonder het te beseffen zit een vlieg mee in de machine, waardoor het DNA van de twee mengen. Langzamerhand moet zijn vriendin Veronica (Geena Davis) aanschouwen hoe hij in een monster verandert.

Cronenbergs fascinatie met de relatie tussen lichaam en technologie, het mengen van het menselijke met het niet-menselijke komen allen tezamen in deze film vol gruwelijke praktische effecten die nog even tijdloos zijn als 40 jaar geleden!

Ook SOCIETY zit boordevol geweldige special effects en body horror, maar valt iets moeilijker te beschrijven zonder bepaalde elementen van het verhaal te onthullen. Bill Whitney is de zoon van een rijke familie uit Beverly Hills. Zijn hele leven voelt hij zich al uitgesloten door zijn ouders, die meer oog lijken te hebben voor zijn zus. Hij worstelt met paranoïde gevoelens over alles in zijn omgeving: zijn vrienden, zijn familie…Nachtmerries houden hem ‘s nachts wakker. Na het horen van vreemde, gruwelijke geluiden op een casette raakt Bill ervan overtuigd dat zijn angsten misschien toch meer op de werkelijkheid zijn gebaseerd dan aanvankelijk gedacht.

Laat het genoeg zijn om te zeggen dat het duo van regisseur Brian Yuzna en make-up artiest Screaming Mad George volledig kunnen tippen aan wat Cronenberg heeft te bieden in THE FLY. Om verder spoilervrij te blijven raden we aan om niets over de film op te zoeken. Bekijk zelfs de trailer hieronder niet, maar kom gewoon kijken!

In David Cronenberg's THE FLY (a remake of the 1950s sci-fi classic of the same name), we meet the brilliant, eccentric Professor Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum). When he develops a machine that seems to make teleportation possible, he decides to test it himself. Without realising it, a fly gets into the machine, causing the DNA of the two to become one. Gradually, his girlfriend Veronica (Geena Davis) has to watch him turn into a monster.

Cronenberg's fascination with the relationship between body and technology, the mixing of the human with the non-human, all come together perfectly in this film full of gruesome practical effects that are as timeless now as they were 40 years ago!

SOCIETY is also packed with amazing special effects and body horror, but is a little more difficult to describe without revealing certain elements of the story. Bill Whitney is the son of a wealthy Beverly Hills family. All his life, he has felt excluded by his parents, who seem to favour his sister. He struggles with paranoid feelings in his environment: his friends, his family... Nightmares keep him awake. After hearing strange, gruesome sounds on a cassette tape, Bill becomes convinced that his fears may be based on reality after all.

Suffice it to say that the duo of director Brian Yuzna and make-up artist Screaming Mad George are every bit as good as Cronenberg in THE FLY. To avoid spoilers, we recommend not looking up anything about the film. Don't even watch the trailer below, just come and see for yourself!
