In GHARE BAIRE keert Satyajit Ray terug naar de literatuur van Rabindranath Tagore, die ook CHARULATA inspireerde. Tegen de achtergrond van de Swadeshi-beweging in Brits-Indië ontdekt de hoogopgeleide maar afgeschermde Bimala voor het eerst de wereld buiten de muren van haar huis.
Aangespoord door haar idealistische echtgenoot Nikhil, ontmoet ze diens beste vriend Sandip: een charismatische nationalist die zowel haar politieke als haar persoonlijke verlangens aanwakkert. Maar Ray toont hoe revolutionaire vurigheid kan omslaan in egoïsme en manipulatie, en hoe ware integriteit zich vaak stil houdt.
Met sobere intensiteit en morele gelaagdheid onderzoekt Ray de botsing tussen rede en passie, trouw en verleiding – en het pijnlijk ontwaken van een vrouw én een land.

In GHARE BAIRE, Satyajit Ray returns to the literature of Rabindranath Tagore, who also inspired CHARULATA. Against the backdrop of the Swadeshi movement in British India, the educated yet sheltered Bimala experiences the world outside her home for the first time.
Spurred on by her idealistic husband, Nikhil, she meets his best friend, Sandip—a charismatic nationalist who fuels both her political and personal desires. Ray illustrates how revolutionary fervour can turn to selfishness and manipulation, and how genuine integrity often remains silent.
With austere intensity and moral layering, Satyajit Ray explores the clash between reason and passion, fidelity and seduction, and the painful awakening of a woman and a country.
The film will be followed by the lecture ‘Ray’s Nationalism’ by Rochona Majumdar.
