In MAHANAGAR schetst Satyajit Ray een ontwapenend portret van een vrouw die haar plaats zoekt in een snel veranderende wereld. Terwijl de grootstad Kolkata moderniseert, verschijnen er scheurtjes in de patriarchale orde. Arati, echtgenote van een onderbetaalde bankbediende, besluit het huishouden financieel te ondersteunen en gaat aan de slag als deur-aan-deurverkoopster van breimachines. Haar keuze zet familiale zekerheden onder druk, maar opent tegelijk nieuwe perspectieven.

Ray verweeft deze persoonlijke emancipatie met een scherpe, maar fijnzinnige satire op de Indiase middenklasse en de Anglo-Indiase gemeenschap, die tussen twee werelden in lijkt vast te zitten. Een vroege, maar nog steeds brandend actuele reflectie op gender, arbeid en sociale verandering.

In MAHANAGAR, Satyajit Ray paints a disarming portrait of a woman seeking her place in a rapidly changing world. As the metropolis of Kolkata modernises, cracks appear in the patriarchal order. Arati, wife of an underpaid bank clerk, decides to support the household financially and goes to work as a door-to-door saleswoman selling knitting machines. Her choice puts family securities under pressure, but at the same time, it opens up new perspectives.

Ray interweaves this personal emancipation with a sharp but finely crafted satire of the Indian middle class and the Anglo-Indian community, which seems caught between two worlds. An early but still searingly topical reflection on gender, labour, and social change.
