In NAYAK, Satyajit Ray follows a Bengali film star on a train journey to Delhi, where he is to receive a prestigious award. What starts as a banal journey turns into an inner odyssey: in conversations and dream sequences, the actor confronts himself with doubt, regret, and the emptiness behind his fame. Is he truly the hero (“nayak”) the audience sees in him?
NAYAK is one of Ray’s more introspective and symbolic films—a rare insight into the psyche of a celebrity, but also a reflection on the illusions of cinema itself. Nuanced, critical, and unexpectedly personal.
