SEEMABADDHA is het tweede deel van Satyajit Rays Calcutta-trilogie. Meer nog dan een klassiek drama is deze film uit 1971 een geraffineerde ontleding van morele afbrokkeling in een wereld die uiterlijk vertoon boven alles plaatst.
Centraal in SEEMABADDHA staat Shyamal, een man die alles heeft: een goedbetaalde job bij een Brits bedrijf, een modern appartement, een loyale vrouw. Zijn schoonzus Tutul komt logeren en kijkt vol bewondering naar zijn leven, zijn welbespraaktheid, zijn idealen. Maar wanneer een belangrijke levering misloopt, zet Shyamal zijn principes opzij: hij organiseert een nepstaking om de vertraging te maskeren. Er valt een gewonde, maar het plan werkt. Hij wordt beloond met een promotie. Hoe is Tutul zo geworden?

SEEMABADDHA is the second part of Satyajit Ray’s Calcutta trilogy. More than just a classic drama, this 1971 film is a sophisticated examination of moral decay in a world where ostentation prevails above all else.
At the centre of SEEMABADDHA is Shyamal, a man who has everything: a well-paid job with a British company, a modern apartment, and a loyal wife. His sister-in-law Tutul comes to stay and looks on in admiration at his life, his eloquence, and his ideals. But when an important delivery goes awry, Shyamal sets aside his principles: he organises a fake strike to mask the delay. One person gets injured, but the plan works. He is rewarded with a promotion. How did Tutul become this way?
With a keen eye for detail, Satyajit Ray illustrates how the hunger for success can slowly erode people.
