Douglas Sirk’s melodrama is a veiled charge against the American class system and the socio-cultural restrictions certain milieus placed upon themselves. Sirk’s enchanting colours, frame in frames and reflections underline the symbolism in this fateful love story. Jane Wyman’s melancholic performance beautifully portrays her character’s despair.

ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS might not be a Christmas movie in the strictest sense of the word, but the film does feature one of the most memorable scenes set on the joyous holiday.
