Vertrekkend van een ware gebeurtenis – het “Bloody Christmas”-schandaal waar zeven gevangenen in elkaar geslagen werden door een groep dronken politieagenten – evolueert L.A. Politieagent Bud White gebruikt zijn vuisten om zijn versie van gerechtigheid te bekomen en Narcotica brigadier Jack Vincennes is op zoek naar zijn 15 minutes of fame en collaboreert met roddeljournalist Sid Hudgens door hem vertrouwelijke informatie toe te spelen. Starting from a true event – the “Bloody Christmas” scandal that saw seven prisoners being beaten up by drunken policemen – L.A. CONFIDENTIAL evolves into a conspiracy thriller that links corruption, scandal and the underworld together in several connected storylines.  

In the Los Angeles of the fifties, three very different police officers are searching for the truth behind a series of unsolved murders. The men are driven by their own motives and obsessions. Detective Ed Exley is the son of a murdered cop, who wants to avenge his father but above all wants to get ahead on the force. Police officer Bud White uses his fists to achieve his kind of justice and Narcotics sergeant Jack Vincennes is looking for his own 15 minutes of fame and collaborates with tabloid journalist Sid Hudgens by passing him classified information. Off the record, on the QT, and very hush hush.

The movie is packed with anti-Christmas sentiment: fear, tension and brutality. And the Christmas presents that L.A. CONFIDENTIAL hands out are wrapped in corruption and violence. Those are the ingredients for a perfect atypical Christmas movie.
