APARAJITO is het tweede deel uit Satyajit Rays humanistische trilogie over Apu. Intussen is Apu een jongeman die samen met zijn familie van het platteland naar de bruisende stad Benares verhuist. Zijn evolutie van curieuze kind tot leergierige jongvolwassene leidt hem uiteindelijk weg van huis, om te gaan studeren in Kolkata. In zijn zoektocht naar zelfexpressie en een eigen identiteit dwaalt hij zich tegelijkertijd steeds verder weg van zijn moeder (en haar traditionele waarden). Deze film uit 1956 vertoont op wonderlijke wijze de wrijving tussen modernisme en traditie waarmee Apu worstelt.

APARAJITO is the second installment of Satyajit Ray’s humanist trilogy about Apu. Now Apu has become a young man, who moves with his family from the countryside to the buzzing city of Benares. His evolution from a curious child into an inquisitive young adult eventually leads him away from home, to go to college in Kolkata. In his search for self-expression and his own identity he moves further and further away from his mother and her traditional values. This film from 1956 wondrously depicts the friction between modernism and tradition with which Apu struggles.
After the screening, Ritika Kaushik will give a lecture on ‘Bonds of Family and Tradition in Ray’s Films'.
