APUR SANSAR is het derde deel en sluitstuk van Satyajit Rays APU-trilogie. We volgen de nu 23-jarige Apu, die als idealistische, worstelende schrijver met moeite de eindjes aan elkaar kan knopen. Dit gebrek aan financieel vermogen zorgt ervoor dat Apu zijn dromen opgeeft en vrede neemt met een bescheiden bestaan. Maar het leven is onverwacht, net als de komst van Aparna, de zus van Apu’s universiteitsvriend Pulu. Apu en Aparna groeien naar elkaar toe en bouwen samen aan een toekomst. Helaas is het leven naast onverwacht, ook genadeloos. Apu’s zoektocht naar spiritualiteit en kennis lijkt ook in dit laatste deel van de trilogie begeleid te worden door verlies en verdriet.

APUR SANSAR is the third and final instalment of Satyajit Ray’s APU-trilogy. We follow the now 23-year-old Apu, who barely makes ends meet as an idealistic and struggling writer. This lack of financial means has culminated in Apu giving up his dreams and accepting a meagre living. But life is unexpected, just like the arrival of Aparna, the sister of Apu’s university friend Pulu. Apu and Aparna grow closer and build a future together. Unfortunately, life is not only unexpected, but often merciless as well. Apu’s search for spirituality and knowledge seems to be accompanied by loss and sadness in this third part of the trilogy as well.
