Na de dood van zijn ouders moet James bij zijn twee vreselijke tantes gaan wonen, waar ze hem alle soorten werkjes laten opknappen. Alles verandert voor James wanneer hij een spin redt uit de handen van zijn tante en een tovenaar hem magische krokodillentongen aanbiedt. Uit de tongen groeit een gigantische perzik, die de thuis is van allerlei antropomorfe insecten. James en zijn nieuwe insectenvrienden plannen een grootse ontsnapping naar New York, ver weg van zijn verschrikkelijke tantes. JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH is een eigenzinnige mix tussen live action en stopmotion animatie, een waarlijk technisch hoogstandje. Roald Dahl zelf dacht dat zijn boek onverfilmbaar was en het was pas na zijn dood dat weduwe Felicity Dahl de filmrechten goedkeurde: “Roald would have been delighted with what they did with James. It is a wonderful film,” zei ze over het eindproduct.

After the death of his parents, James has to go and live with his two terrible aunts, who make him do menial labour. Everything changes for James when he saves a spider from the clutches of his aunt and meets a wizard who offers him magical crocodile tongues. When dropped on the ground, the tongues grow into a giant peach, which turns out to be the home of several anthropomorphic insects. James and his new friends plan a great escape to New York, far away from his horrible aunts. Because if you try hard and long enough, “marvelous things will happen.”

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH is a quirky mix between live action and stop-motion animation, a true technical marvel. Roald Dahl himself thought his book was unadaptable. Only after his death, his widow Felicity Dahl approved the film rights: “Roald would have been delighted with what they did with James. It is a wonderful film,” she said.
