Maar liefst tien jaar lang werkte Almodóvar aan het scenario van LA MALA EDUCACIÓN, een neo-noir melodrama waarin hij het verhaal vertelt van twee herenigde jeugdliefdes die verstrikt raken in een moordmysterie.

Begin jaren zestig worden twee jongens (Gael García Bernal, Fele Martínez) verliefd op een katholieke school. Vader Manolo is getuige van deze ontdekkingen, maar neemt er ook aan deel. De drie personages komen jaren later opnieuw tegenover elkaar te staan. Op slimme manier lopen de tijden door elkaar en komen de jongens terecht in een web van chantage, wellust en verwarring.

De psychologische raamvertelling verkent  gevoelige thema’s als drugsgebruik en transseksualiteit en het effect van religieus onderwijs en seksueel misbruik tijdens het Franco-tijdperk.

Pedro Almodóvar spent no less than ten years working on the script for LA MALA EDUCACIÓN, a neo-noir melodrama in which he tells the story of two childhood lovers reunited and entangled in a murder mystery.

In the early 1960s, two boys (Gael García Bernal, Fele Martínez) fall in love at a Catholic school. Father Manolo witnesses these discoveries but also becomes involved in them. Years later, the three characters face each other again. Time periods cleverly overlap as the boys find themselves caught in a web of blackmail, desire, and confusion.

This psychological narrative frame explores sensitive themes such as drug use, transsexuality, and the impact of religious education and sexual abuse during the Franco era.
