In zijn regiedebuut toont Satyajit Ray een stille mijmering over de jeugd van een Bengaalse jongen uit een arm gezin, het eerste deel van wat later de befaamde Apu-trilogie zou worden. Via loepzuiver symbolisme, visuele poëzie en humanistisch geloof presenteert Ray een subtiele film die in eigen land het publiek kon bekoren.

PATHER PANCHALI wordt gezien als een van de eerste films van de Parallel Cinema (of New Indian Cinema), geïnspireerd door Italiaans Neorealisme, dat zich tegen de commerciële Indische cinema keerde. De realistische voorstelling van armoede en de schoonheid in het dagelijkse leven staan in beide bewegingen voorop. Ray liep de Gouden Palm mis op Cannes (die dat jaar naar LE MONDE DU SILENCE ging), maar wist toch internationaal door te breken.

In his directorial debut, Satyajit Ray shows a quiet reverie of the youth of a Bengal boy from a poor family, the first part of what would later become the famous Apu-trilogy. Through flawless symbolism, visual poetry and humanistic faith, Ray presents a subtle film, which charmed audiences in his own country.

PATHER PANCHALI is considered one of the first films of the Parallel Cinema (or New Indian Cinema), inspired by Italian Neorealism, and wanted to counter the commercial Indian cinema. The realistic depiction of poverty and the beauty of daily life are front and center in both cinematic movements. Ray lost out on the Palme d’Or at Cannes (which went to LE MONDE DU SILENCE that year), but nevertheless the film became an international success.
