Diahann Carroll werd genomineerd voor een Oscar voor haar hoofdrol in CLAUDINE, een film die toont wat liefhebben is in een wereld die bevooroordeeld is tegen mensen van kleur. “How can frightened people change anything?”, vraagt Claudines oudste zoon aan zijn moeder. “There ain't no other kind of people, Charles. If you ain't scared, you don't have need for guts.” En lef heeft de alleenstaande moeder van zes met hopen. Dat lef is nodig om te overleven in hun klein huurappartement in Harlem, naast haar karige uitkering, én om lief te hebben. Claudine start een relatie met vuilnisman Rupert tegen de zin van haar kinderen. De charismatische Rupert wordt gespeeld door James Earl Jones, die nadien bekend werd door zijn rol in COMING TO AMERICA (1988) en zijn stemmenwerk in de STAR WARS en de LION KING films.

CLAUDINE werd in 1974 gereleaset tijdens een periode waarin Black cinema groeide en bloeide buiten de oevers van stereotypering en het populaire blaxploitation genre. De film beantwoordde aan een alternatieve stroming: het verhaal van een vrouw, een familiedrama waarin romantiek en politiek werden verweven. CLAUDINE was de eerste film die uitgebracht werd door het kortstondige Third World Cinema Corporation, opgericht door een collectief van mensen van kleur, waaronder Ossie Davis, Rita Moreno en Piri Thomas, in een poging “to elevate the standards of films dealing with minorities, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.”

De film kaart systemische sociaaleconomische ongelijkheden aan in Amerika, waar sociale bijstand voornamelijk werd opgericht voor witte weduwen met kinderen. Vrouwen van kleur werden systematisch uitgesloten, o.a. voor redenen zoals moraliteit (zes kinderen wees bijvoorbeeld voor de staat op seksuele immoraliteit) en de mythe van de “welfare queen”, die misbruik zou maken van het systeem en van de belastingbetalers. CLAUDINE toont een wereld die geleid wordt door dat stigma rond zwarte familiestructuren en geeft poëtisch antwoord op die vooroordelen, in de vorm van een geliefde heldin.

De onvergetelijke soundtrack van Curtis Mayfield, gezongen door Gladys Knight & the Pips, werkt als een Grieks koor, een overschouwend personage dat meeleeft met Claudine, reageert op haar strijd en een stem geeft aan haar angsten en hoop.

CLAUDINE maakt deel uit van het MOMMIE DEAREST-programma, waarin De Cinema peilt naar de kracht van moeders en onze perceptie van het ‘ideale’ moederschap in cinema.

Diahann Carroll was nominated for an Oscar for her lead performance in CLAUDINE, a film that shows what it means to love in a world that is biased against people of colour. “How can frightened people change anything?”, asks Claudine’s oldest son. “There ain't no other kind of people, Charles. If you ain't scared, you don't have need for guts.” And guts is something the mother-of-six has in abundance. Those guts are necessary goods to survive in their small rental apartment in Harlem, in addition to her meager welfare check, and to love. Claudine starts a relationship with garbage collector Rupert against her children’s wishes. The charismatic Rupert is played by James Earl Jones, who went on to find fame with his roles in COMING TO AMERICA (1988) and his voice acting in the STAR WARS franchise and the LION KING films.

CLAUDINE was released in 1974 during a time when Black cinema was growing and flourishing outside of the banks of stereotypes and the popular blaxploitation genre. The film answered to an alternative movement, telling the story of a women, a family drama where romance was interwoven with politics. CLAUDINE was the first film to be released by the short-lived Third World Cinema Corporation, founded by a collective of people of colour, amongst whom Ossie Davis, Rita Moreno and Piri Thomas, in an effort “to elevate the standards of films dealing with minorities, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.”

The film addresses systemic socio-economical disparities in America, where social welfare was mainly created for white widows with children. Women of colour were systematically excluded for reasons such as morality (six children for example pointed to sexual immorality) and the myth of the “welfare queen”, who supposedly exploited the system and the taxpayers. CLAUDINE shows a world that is led by this stigma of Black family structures and formulates a poetic response to those prejudices, in the shape of a beloved heroine.

The unforgettable soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield, sung by Gladys Knight & the Pips, functions as a  Greek chorus, an overseeing character that empathises with Claudine, reacts to her struggles and voices her fears and hopes.
