Dubbelportret van Weronika in het Poolse Krakau en haar dubbelganger Véronique in Frankrijk. De beide meisjes worden op dezelfde dag geboren, lijden aan dezelfde hartkwaal, zijn beiden muzikaal. Op het moment dat de één sterft krijgt de ander een cassettebandje van een mysterieuze onbekende, met aanwijzingen waarmee ze op zoek gaat naar de ander. Hoofdrolspeelster Irène Jacob won in 1991 op het filmfestival van Cannes de prijs voor Beste actrice.
