THE MASTER

In PTA & HIS MASTERS kijken we naar de officieuze filmische voorouders van Paul Thomas Anderson. We plaatsen de regisseur – een van de grootste Amerikaanse regisseurs van zijn generatie – naast de invloeden die hij ongegeneerd citeert in zijn werk. In PTA & HIS MASTERS linken we THE MASTER aan John Hustons LET THERE BE LIGHT.

Als je PTA voor het blok zou zetten en hij een favoriet uit zijn eigen film zou moeten kiezen, dan gaat hij voor THE MASTER. Zijn verklaring: THE MASTER is zijn meest emotionele en persoonlijke film. “The amount of emotion I put into it and Phil Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams put into it. It feels unique to me. I really hope it will be something people can revisit and enjoy in a way that equals my pride in it.” PTA erkent de sentimentaliteit die hij in de film stak. “There’s a particular sentimentality attached to it for a number of personal reasons. It’s all wrapped up.” Die persoonlijke toets kunnen we toeschrijven aan PTA’s relatie met zijn vader, Ernie Anderson. Hij was een oorlogsveteraan die getekend terugkwam uit de oorlog, maar iedere vorm van toegeving aan zijn trauma’s zag als een vorm van zwakte. Een andere reden waarom THE MASTER PTA zo nauw aan het hart ligt: het werd de laatste samenwerking tussen PTA en zijn hartsvriend Philip Seymour Hoffman, die twee jaar later overleed aan een overdosis.

THE MASTER volgt veteraan Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) na afloop van zijn dienstplicht bij de US Navy na WOII. Quell heeft het moeilijk om zich aan te passen aan het leven buiten de marine en lijdt aan PTSS. Zijn ervaringen tijdens de oorlog maakten van hem een agressieve, seks-geobsedeerde dronkaard, die geen plaats meer heeft in de maatschappij. In Sacramento verstopt hij zich op een zeiljacht waar ook charismatisch cultleider Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) aanwezig is. Dodd ziet in Quell de perfecte uitdaging voor zijn filosofische beweging, The Cause. Als hij dit hopeloos geval kan bekeren en re-integreren, dan is het bestaansrecht van zijn “zaak” bewezen. Quell lijkt een gemakkelijke prooi voor Lancasters indoctrinatie en hij reist samen met Dodd en zijn familie rond om de leer van The Cause te verspreiden.

Net zoals bij al zijn films, werd THE MASTER geïnspireerd door vele verschillende bronnen. Het personage Lancaster Dodd baseerde PTA op berucht Scientology oprichter L. Ron Hubbard. Voor het personage van Freddie Quell las PTA de roman V. Van Thomas Pynchon. Maar de film die we naar THE MASTER leggen is John Hustons LET THERE BE LIGHT. Deze documentaire over WOII-veteranen met PTSS legt de basis voor de sterke psychologisering in THE MASTER. Ten tijde van LET THERE BE LIGHT in 1946 was PTSS nog geen erkende aandoening en de release van de documentaire werd zelfs tientallen jaren tegengehouden door de overheid. PTA toonde met zijn visie op het Amerika van de jaren 50 ook de desillusie van terugkerende soldaten, die een makkelijk doelwit waren voor de schijngeloofsovertuigingen met pseudowetenschappelijke onderbouwing die in die tijd uit de grond sproten. 

LET THERE BE LIGHT was de spiegel die PTA zichzelf voorlegde om teruggekeerde oorlogsveteranen zo getrouw mogelijk af te beelden. Het was voor de filmmaker van cruciaal belang om de zware gevolgen van de oorlog op Amerikaanse soldaten en hun psyche met het grootste respect te benaderen. Hij voegde de documentaire zelfs toe als speciale feature op de Blu-ray van THE MASTER. PTA heeft zijn invloeden nooit onder stoelen of banken gestoken.

In PTA & HIS MASTERS we take a look at the unofficial filmic predecessors of Paul Thomas Anderson. We place the director – arguably one of the most important directors of his generation – next to the influences he unabashedly cites in his work. In PTA & HIS MASTERS we link THE MASTER to John Huston’s LET THERE BE LIGHT.

If you were to ask PTA to pick the favourite of his own movies, he would choose THE MASTER. His explanation: THE MASTER is his most emotional and personal film. “The amount of emotion I put into it and Phil Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams put into it. It feels unique to me. I really hope it will be something people can revisit and enjoy in a way that equals my pride in it.” PTA acknowledges the sentimentality he put into the movie. “There’s a particular sentimentality attached to it for a number of personal reasons. It’s all wrapped up.” This personal touch can be attributed to PTA’s relationship with his father, Ernie Anderson. He was a veteran who returned from the war scarred, but who saw any indication of concession to his traumas as a sign of weakness. Another reason why THE MASTER is so close to PTA’s heart: the movie became the last collaboration with best friend and frequent collaborator Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died of an overdose two years later.

THE MASTER follows veteran Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) after his discharge from the US Navy after WOII. Quell has difficulties to adjust to life outside of the army and suffers from PTSD. His experiences during the war made him into an aggressive, sex-obsessed alcoholic, who has no place in society. In Sacramento, he stows away on a sailing yacht and meets charismatic cult leader Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Dodd sees Quell as the perfect challenge for his philosophical movement, The Cause. If he can convert and reintegrate this hopeless cause, the legitimacy of his own “cause” is proven. Quell seems to be an easy prey for Lancaster’s indoctrination and he travels with the Dodd family to spread the teachings of The Cause.

Just like with all of his films, THE MASTER was inspired by many different sources. The character of Lancaster Dodd was based on the infamous Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. For the character of Freddie Quell, PTA read the novel V. by Thomas Pynchon. But the movie we place next to THE MASTER, is John Huston’s LET THERE BE LIGHT. This documentary about WOII veterans with PTSD was the base of the strong psychologization in THE MASTER. At the time of LET THERE BE LIGHT in 1946 PTSS was not yet recognised as a condition and the release of the documentary was even halted by the government for decades. With his vision on the US of the fifties, PTA also showed the disillusion of the returning soldiers, who were an easy target for sham religions with pseudoscientific explanations that were sprouting in those days.

LET THERE BE LIGHT was the mirror PTA used to portray war veterans as accurately as possible. It was crucial to the filmmaker to approach the severe consequences of the war on American soldiers and their psyche with the utmost respect. He even included the documentary as a special feature on the Blu-ray of THE MASTER. PTA never concealed his influences.
