Norman Maine, een filmster met een tanende carrière, ontmoet showgirl Esther Blodgett wanneer hij op een avond dronken haar act verstoort. Norman helpt Esther – nu met podiumnaam Vicki Lester – om een ster te worden en hun vrienschap bloeit in een romance. Hun relatie komt echter onder druk te staan wanneer haar faam groeit, terwijl de zijne keldert en zijn drankprobleem groeit.
