In een dromerige, Brusselse nocturne vangt Chantal Akerman meer dan twee dozijn mensen in korte vignettes. Tussen gordijnen en achter ramen positioneert de Belgische filmmaker haar personages met grote zorg: elke scène ontsluit een totaal nieuwe wereld.

De mozaïekfilm TOUTE UNE NUIT speelt zich af tijdens een zomerse onweersnacht in Brussel. Tot aan het ochtendgloren, in de vochtige warmte, beleven mannen en vrouwen de liefde, dromen ervan of vinden haar op hun pad. De tijd lijkt stilgezet door het verlangen. Er staat iets te gebeuren, onontkoombaar.

Zo vormt Akerman een soort ballet, een legpuzzel van dansers die elkaar steeds weer kruisen, met fragmenten van gesprekken tussen geliefden als stukjes uit een roman.  Er hangt een “coup de foudre” in de lucht, maar de donder drijft de koppels weer uiteen; de waarheid slaat in als een revolverschot. TOUTE UNE NUIT zit vol nachtelijke beeldpoëzie, een hoogtepunt in Akermans oeuvre: de nacht als het moment voor onverwachte ontmoetingen.

De film werd gerestaureerd door CINEMATEK en Fondation Chantal Akerman. Wij vertonen die gerestaureerde versie in 4K.

In a dreamy, Brussels nocturne, Chantal Akerman captures more than two dozen people in short vignettes. Between curtains and behind windows, the Belgian filmmaker positions her characters with great care: each scene unlocks a whole new world.

TOUTE UNE NUIT takes place during a stormy summer night in Brussels. Men and women sweat through the tense, sultry heat until dawn, living, dreaming of, or stumbling across love. It’s as if time is suspended, magnified by desire and anticipation. Something will happen this evening: it is inevitable.

And thus a ballet takes shape, a puzzle, a chassé-croisé. Chantal Akerman offers us “fragments of lovers’ discourse”, pieces from a novel. Couples are suddenly split apart by a coup de foudre, and truths shatter the silence like gunfire. TOUTE UNE NUIT is filled to the brim with visual poetry, a high point in Akerman’s career: the night is full of unexpected encounters.
