In deze compilatie van korte pioniersfilms worden ’s werelds eerste gedocumenteerde filmpjes getoond en gekaderd. We gaan van start aan het eind van de 19de eeuw, met de Lumière broers en Edison. Zij zetten vooral in op het vastleggen van alledaagse taferelen. Daarna trekken we richting Verenigd Koninkrijk met o.a. James Williamson en William Haggar, die in hun one-reelers een eerste narratieve opzet introduceerden. Edwin S. Porter, Georges Méliès en D.W. Griffith maken de compilatie compleet met de echte overstap naar narratieve film.

De films worden live begeleid op piano door Hilde Nash.

De pionierscompilatie wordt voorafgegaan door een lezing om 19u00 over precinema en de pionierscinema in Europa en Amerika. De lezing wordt gegeven door Wouter Hessels, docent filmgeschiedenis KASKA-DKO, RITCS en INSAS en is gratis bij je filmticket inbegrepen.

The films are silent

In this compilation of short pioneer films, the world’s first documented clips and films are compiled and contextualised. We start our film historic journey at the end of the 19th century, with the Lumière Brothers and Edison. These early filmmakers mostly capture everyday scenes. In the UK, James Williamson and William Haggar are among the first to introduce an early narrative set-up in their one-reelers. Edwin S. Porter, Georges Méliès and D.W. Griffith complete this compilation with the true transition into narrative filmmaking.

The films are scored live on piano by Hilde Nash.

The screening of the compilation of pioneer films is preceded by a lecture at 19h00 on precinema and the pioneer cinema in Europe and America. The lecture is given by Wouter Hessels, professor of film history KASKA-DKO, RITCS and INSAS, and is included in your film ticket.
