Juno MacGuff, een eigenzinnig zestienjarig meisje, ziet haar leven op zijn kop gezet wanneer ze onverwacht zwanger raakt van de charmante maar onhandige Bleeker. Met de steun van haar vader, stiefmoeder en beste vriendin Leah gaat ze op zoek naar de ideale adoptieouders, en zo kruist ze het pad van Mark en Vanessa Loring. Het scherp geschreven scenario en de levendige dialogen maken van JUNO een intelligente komedie over de keuzes en kwetsbaarheden die met het (aanstaand) moederschap gepaard gaan.

JUNO is de eerste aflevering in de onbewuste trilogie die regisseur Jason Reitman en scenarist Diablo Cody samen creëerden, met YOUNG ADULT (2011) en TULLY (2018) als tweede en derde titels. “The films fit together as an unintentional trilogy. JUNO being about being prematurely thrust into adulthood, YOUNG ADULT is about resisting adulthood, and TULLY is about finding grace and acceptance in midlife,” volgens het makersduo.

Diablo Cody zei over haar coming-of-age verhaal: “You can look at it as a film that celebrates life and celebrates childbirth, or you can look at it as a film about a liberated young girl who makes a choice to continue being liberated. Or you can look at it as some kind of twisted love story, you know, a meditation on maturity.”

Deze vertoning maakt ook deel uit van het MOMMIE DEAREST-programma, waarin De Cinema peilt naar de kracht van moeders en onze perceptie van het ‘ideale’ moederschap in cinema met o.a. ook TULLY van hetzelfde duo Cody & Reitman.

Juno MacGuff, a quirky sixteen-year-old girl, has her life turned upside down when she falls unexpectedly pregnant after a one-time experience with the charming but awkward Bleeker. With the support of her father, stepmother and best friend Leah, she sets out to find the perfect adoptive parents and crosses paths with Mark and Vanessa Loring. The sharply written screenplay and the lively dialogues turn JUNO into an intelligent comedy about the choices and vulnerabilities that go hand in hand with motherhood.
