De 16-jarige Juno ontdekt dat ze zwanger is na een eenmalig avontuur met haar beste vriend Bleeker. Juno besluit het kindje te krijgen en af te staan voor adoptie. Ze vindt een koppel in de contactadvertenties in een krant, contacteert hen, vertelt het nieuws en haar beslissing aan haar vader en stiefmoeder en blijft naar school gaan. Juno ontmoet het koppel, creëert een band met hen en de tijd gaat voorbij. Maar soms worden zelfs de meest zorgvuldige plannen overhoop gehaald…

JUNO is de eerste aflevering in de onbewuste trilogie die regisseur Jason Reitman en scenarist Diablo Cody samen creëerden, met YOUNG ADULT (2011) en TULLY (2018) als tweede en derde titels. “The films fit together as an unintentional trilogy. JUNO being about being prematurely thrust into adulthood, YOUNG ADULT is about resisting adulthood, and TULLY is about finding grace and acceptance in midlife,” volgens het makersduo. 

Diablo Cody zei over haar coming-of-age verhaal: “You can look at it as a film that celebrates life and celebrates childbirth, or you can look at it as a film about a liberated young girl who makes a choice to continue being liberated. Or you can look at it as some kind of twisted love story, you know, a meditation on maturity.”

JUNO maakt deel uit van het MOMMIE DEAREST-programma, waarin De Cinema peilt naar de kracht van moeders en onze perceptie van het ‘ideale’ moederschap in cinema.

De film markeert de Script Club #2, onze tweede samenwerking met de Scenaristengilde. Na de visie volgt een gesprek met scenarist Zita Theunynck, dat ook gecapteerd wordt in de Script Club-podcast.

The sixteen-year-old Juno falls unexpectedly pregnant after a one-off adventure with her best friend Bleeker. Juno decides to have the baby and give it up for adoption. She finds a suitable in the newspaper personals, contacts them, tells her father and step-mother the news and continues school. Juno meets the couple, forms a close bond with them and time passes. But sometimes even the most meticulous plans are turned upside down…

JUNO is part of the MOMMIE DEAREST-series, where De Cinema explores the power of mothers and our perception of the ‘ideal’ motherhood in cinema.

The film marks the Script Club #2, our second collaboration with the Scenaristengilde. After the screening, there will be a conversation with screenwriter Zita Theunynck, which will also be captured in the Script Club podcast.
