Terrence Malick’s debut BADLANDS tells the story of a relationship between a young couple, the 15-year-old Holly (Sissy Spacek) and the 25-year-old Kit (Martin Sheen). It’s a story we all know, about a couple of criminals who move across America and leave a trail of destruction, like BONNIE AND CLYDE. It doesn’t take long before the police are in hot pursuit, and we follow them on the run across the desert of America. Malick wrote the screenplay of this film during a road trip, and he emulates that atmosphere in the movie. His character Holly narrates the story in third person, distancing herself from her own life. With BADLANDS, Malick set the tone for the rest of his oeuvre as one of the most important American auteurs of his time.
