In ruraal Mexico raakt het lot van drie vrouwen uit verschillende sociale klassen verstrengeld wanneer een tragische vermissingszaak hen op elkaars pad brengt.

Het huwelijk van de rijke Isabel loopt op de klippen en ze verhuist naar een oude, verwaarloosde villa, die vroeger van haar moeder was. Wanneer de zus van haar huishoudster spoorloos verdwijnt, wordt duidelijk dat het onderzoek gestuurd wordt door politiebanden met de maffia. De vrouwelijke hoofdcommissaris die het onderzoek leidt, heeft haar eigen problemen. Wanneer haar zoon betrokken raakt bij de maffia en de drugshandel, is de politieagente de wanhoop nabij.

Deze Mexicaanse misdaadfilm en debuut van regisseur en scenarist Natalia López Gallardo vertrekt vanuit haar sterke achtergrond als monteur (o.a. voor echtgenoot Carlos Reygadas) om een mysterieus verhaal te verbeelden in een atmosfeer van schuld en boete, horror en schaamte. ROBE OF GEMS klaagt misdaad, klasse politiek en corruptie aan in het moderne Mexico. Gallardo’s ensemble film vermengt realisme, droomsequenties en metaforen om de mensen, die verdwijnen tussen de scheuren van de samenleving, een stem te geven.

Filmhistoricus Wouter Hessels (docent filmgeschiedenis/filmanalyse RITCS – INSAS – KASKA-dko) gaat na de vertoning van ROBE OF GEMS op donderdag 5 juni in gesprek met filmmaker Natalia López Gallardo.

In rural Mexico, the fates of three women from different social classes collide when the tragic case of a missing person leads them on a path of pain and redemption.

When the marriage of the rich Isabel breaks down, she moves to an old, decrepit villa, formerly owned by her mother. When the sister of her maid disappears without a trace, it becomes clear that the investigation is guided by police ties to the mafia. The female chief commissioner who leads the investigation is dealing with her own problems. When her son becomes involved with the mob and the drug trade, the police officer is close to despair.

This Mexican crime film and debut of director and writer Natalia López Gallardo is clearly influenced by her experience as editor (a.o. for her husband Carlos Reygadas) to tell a mysterious tale, clouded in an atmosphere of guilt and penance, horror and shame. Gallardo’s ensemble film mixes realism, dream sequences and metaphors to give a voice to the people who disappear through the cracks in society in the age of corruption and class politics in modern Mexico.

After the screening of ROBE OF GEMS on Thursday June 5, film historian Wouter Hessels (professor of film history/film analysis RITCS – INSAS – KASKA-dko) will talk about the film with filmmaker Natalia López Gallardo.
